Can Knee Braces Help to Avoid Injury & Benefit the Healing Process?

Knee braces are useful for a variety of knee conditions as well as preventing a knee injury to begin with. There are two kinds of braces.

The prophylactic brace is used to prevent knee injuries, often worn by athletes for protection and durability.

A functional brace is for those who already have an injury. These knee braces are designed to compensate for a torn knee ligament.

Knee braces are made from all kinds of materials. Some of the lower end braces for protection are usually made of elastic materials used to provide stability for ligaments around and for the knee cap.

Some of the heavier braces are for people who have already had an injury to that area and these braces are usually made from metal and plastic.

Both prophylactic and functional braces are effective in what they do. But with the brace being worn over the wound and not directly fixing it, definitely has its limitations.

If the brace is not put on right allowing the knee to bend appropriately, then it can slow the healing process and put extra strain on the injury as well.

Ligament injuries usually heal themselves, but you can also use knee braces to help. It is hard to determine whether a brace is actually practical in preventing injuries.

There are many factors that go into this for example; activity, your height, weight, size and severity of a particular activity on the knee.

Knee braces are designed to be comfortable, portable, small, light, and also come in many different colors so you should have no problem finding the right one for you.

How do you know if you need a knee brace? The following are some of the most common conditions and their symptoms:

Patella tracking disorder which is when the patella (kneecap) shifts out of place as the leg bends or straightens. If you have this condition, you may feel clicking, popping or grinding noises as you walk.

Runner's knee or Patellofemorial syndrome is a common knee injury. The pain from this injury can worsen when sitting or kneeling for long periods and when climbing stairs. It occurs from friction between the patella and the groove in the thigh bone (also known as femur).

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (IBT) is an injury typically associated with athletes and activities such as running, hiking, weightlifting or cycling. When you have this injury you will usually feel pain above the joint and to the outside of the knee.

Jumper's knee or Patellar tendonitis occurs from inflammation of the tendon and the tissues that surround it. It is a common injury from jumping activities hence, the name. You will feel pain above the patellar tendon if you have this condition
