Basics of Traditional Stainless Steel Dental Braces

Today there are many different styles of braces that may help you with your decision on how getting your teeth aligned. Being educated about your different choices and which type of braces will fit your cosmetic and functional needs.

The most common style of braces is the stainless steel. The brackets that are attached to each of your teeth are made of the stainless steel material. Also the arch wire (the main wire attached to your brackets and used to model the arch your dentist desires) is made of stainless steel. Newer metal braces now have smaller brackets than were available in years past. Many teenagers and adults use the colored rubber band options to dress up the look and make the braces more of a personal style.

Gold plated braces are also usually made from stainless steel but have a gold overlay. This for many is a cosmetic option where they may be more inclined to have the gold look over the silver. This is also used on patients that may have an allergic reaction to nickel which is found in stainless steel. The braces are only gold plated for two reason. The most obvious is cost, it could get very expensive if the brackets and wires were made of pure 24k gold. The other is the strength of the gold. Having gold plated braces gives you the durability of the stainless steel but the look of the gold.

With the traditional metal braces does come some extra care of your teeth.

o Floss threader-these can be used to get your floss under the wire and between your teeth.

o Proxy brush is another way to get the food removed from under the wire and between each tooth.

o WaterPik can remove food particles from between the teeth

o You will also want to pay close attention to brushing around the brackets to keep plague from build up. Brushing after each meal or snack will help prevent this build up. You may want to try an electronic toothbrush to help get a good cleaning.

o Fluoride mouth rinses can help strengthen the enamel

o Avoid foods that stick to your teeth like caramels

o Cut up foods like apples or carrots in to smaller pieces to help avoid breaking a bracket off of your tooth.

Discuss with your dentist or orthodontist any concerns or preferences you may have.

Comparing Traditional Braces to Invisalign

Just by looking at the two, one can make several comparisons between traditional braces and Invisalign. But, can you judge them by their covers, or is there more to the story than the eye can tell?

"There are many ways to compare Invisalign and braces. From an orthodontist's perspective, both treatments are fine, but when it comes to patients, there are all sorts of preferences that come into play.

Costs

Braces and Invisalign are comparatively close when it comes to price tags. braces can cost anywhere from $5,400 to $7,700 for basic braces. Costs vary depending on upgrades such as choosing invisible braces over traditional braces or other enhancements. These are enamel-colored braces that are more esthetically pleasing and more concealable.

Esthetics

The "look" of orthodontics is one of the biggest discussions going on in the field. Invisalign developed a treatment that is virtually unrecognizable to the public, where braces are easily identifiable.

Braces don't look like torture devices anymore, and believe it or not there are methods that conceal braces.

iBraces are a system that place braces on the backside of teeth rather than the front. These are highly concealed, but may cause some irregularities to speech. Also, there are invisible braces.

Invisalign are clear plastic aligners that snap over the teeth. These aren't noticeable, but can become awkward in public while dining. Patients can not eat with Invisalign on, as it damages the aligners.

Traditional braces may be openly visible, but that takes away most embarrassing surprises. On the other hand, removing Invisalign trays during meals can be embarrassing. Saliva trapped under the aligners sometimes dangles off the teeth when removing them. So, it's either face braces on the teeth all the time or be ready to excuse yourself for taking out your Invisalign when it's time to eat. Either can be awkward, but the end justifies the means.

Maintenance

In order to keep Invisalign and braces clean and in working order, users need to respect and responsibly maintain their orthodontic equipment.

Parents need to know their children in choosing the right orthodontic method. And if it's an adult seeking treatment, he or she needs to be judicious and responsible.

Invisalign can build up bacteria and plaque on the inside of the aligners and on the outside as well. Also, when not cleaned regularly, Invisalign trays can become odorous. To avoid these problems, Invisalign sells a cleaning solution.

It is vitally important to clean Invisalign trays. If patients don't want to spring for the Invisalign cleaning products, they can use Polident or other denture cleaning products. They're accessible and cheap in most cases, but nonetheless it is critical to keep bacteria from building up on the trays.

Braces can collect plaque and bacteria around the brackets and wires just as Invisalign can collect bacteria on the trays. Brushing around braces and using mouthwash regularly is highly important in keeping good status with oral hygiene. Braces patients with poor hygiene habits can easily develop cases of tooth decay around the base of the brackets.

Also, Invisalign are delicate plastic trays that can be easily cracked, eroded, or even lost. And while braces are fastened to the teeth, so they can't be lost, sometimes the metal wires snap or brackets slide. To counter this, patients need to be careful in what they eat and do.

Invisalign can be a tough choice for adolescent patients as they can so easily lose or break their trays due to their lack of responsibility. But, if that same teen eats certain candy or even hard food like apples, he or she can move their braces, which lengthens treatment time.

Results

This may be the easiest point of comparison between braces and Invisalign. Though Invisalign technology has not come far enough to treat advanced or serious cases of misaligned teeth, both braces and Invisalign provide the same quality in tooth correction for intermediate tooth misalignments and have just about the same treatment times. Depending on the level of care, treatment can take anywhere from six months to two years.

Braces are the only option for more severe cases of tooth misalignments, but patients can switch over to Invisalign after a certain level of progress has been made.

Advances in the field have decreased treatment time and have maximized results. Using digital images and computer imagery, orthodontists can provide images of what orthodontics can provide for patients and how long the treatment would take. This provides patients with a feeling of excitement and anticipation for their new smile, and orthodontists know in advance what the patient wants out of treatment. Combine this technology with improvements to braces technology and Invisalign, and the future is looking bright for orthodontics.

5 Reasons Why Invisalign Is Better Than Traditional Braces

We have all seen people walking around with old-fashioned metal braces. You can't help but notice them. After all, the shiny metal kind of stands out and grabs your attention. Because of this, those who have metal braces often take a verbal lashing from their school-age peers. With the advent of Invisalign, the dentist has been able to help eliminate the psychological stress, as well as many other problems, associated with metal braces.

Invisalign is a brand of clear, removable teeth aligners that fit over teeth and are virtually undetectable. The aligners are custom-made for each patient. Every two weeks, a new aligner is provided, gradually moving the teeth into their correct alignment. There are many reasons the Invisalign system is more beneficial than traditional metal braces, and the relative importance of each reason will vary from person to person. Here are five reasons why Invisalign is better than traditional braces:

No more teasing. With this system, being called names like "brace face" and "metal mouth" is a thing of the past. Those who go with the more modern system do not usually experience teasing. This alone is one of the major reasons why so many people are opting to speak to their orthodontist or cosmetic dentist about Invisalign.
Normal behavior.Traditional braces make it difficult for people to brush and floss their teeth and sometimes even eat certain foods. With the more modern option, wearers can go about their normal activities, for the most part. While they have to keep the device in their mouth for 20 hours per day, they can have it out for of the other four, which provides an opportunity to properly brush, floss and eat.
Comfort.Traditional braces are far from comfortable for most people. They have sharp edges and brackets that can cut into the wearer's mouth and easily cause irritation. Those who opt for Invisalign do not experience such problems because the system does not have sharp edges, brackets or bands.
Maintain color.Traditional braces, which involve bonding the materials to the teeth, can lead to discoloration of the tooth, which becomes apparent once the braces are removed. Invisalign avoids this discoloration because the device is not bonded or glued onto the teeth. When patients stop using the Invisalign system, they still have their normal tooth color.
Adult friendly. Not many adults can get away with wearing metal braces in a professional setting without raising a few eyebrows. Those beyond the teen years who seek the help of a cosmetic dentist can benefit from a system that is less noticeable and will be more accepted in a professional, adult setting. This helps them to be more comfortable while still getting the treatment they desire.

One of the main reasons that some people choose metal braces today is because of the cost difference. While there is a higher cost associated with the Invisalign option, most people agree that not being known as "brace face" or "metal mouth" is well worth the additional benefits that the Invisalign option provides.

Invisalign is offered by skilled cosmetic dentists across the United States. Consult with an experience cosmetic dentist (such as a New Jersey cosmetic dentist ) to help you achieve a brilliant new smile with the use of Invisalign and other top-quality dental procedures.
